ABOUT THE SHOW

This show presents six short series of works by Bon & Lee Roberts. Here are the brief introductions to each of the series to provide a reference for their being.

Metal Raven Series

Reduction of realism to minimalist expression, using only triangular shapes and a solid flat light colour to refract the panels forms in mono tones. These depictions of Ravens are made with as little visual stimulation as possible. The birds statute stances are achieved with careful study and a minimum number of cuts and folds in sheet steel the represent the posture. Removing any trace of emotion provides the viewer to contemplate the structural anatomy of the piece as a whole, it’s quality as a whole is what is interesting and being alone, makes it more clear, concise and powerful.

Raven World Series

Ravens have lived on Earth over 7 million year longer than humans, and they will probably be here long after we have exhausted our human needs and wants on Earth. This ongoing series explores the relationships between Bird & Earth through a variety of mediums from the industrialized & natural worlds. This series question and celebrate environment, evolution, myth, and present them in wall based sculptural works. A set sized and proportioned circle is set within the framed parameters and subjects are presented within this area. A sense of randomness and fleeting pause is presented through ever changing and evolving depiction of the Corus Corax within the framework, illustrating the plethora of intriguing and investigatory natures of the species. The bird interacts with the worlds concept in a variety of ways which more closely connects the subjects interactions.

Bright Raven Skull Series

Boldly coloured acrylic paint applied with hard edges to hand drawn still life studies of Raven Skulls. Colour palettes are non referential with emphasis through drawing and execution on creating sculptural form. Dark vertical extensions fall from natural lines of the skulls and create stick like supportive structures beneath, which creates some ambiguity as to whether the skulls are being monumentalized, or played like a puppets on a stick.

Paper Raven Series

Reduction of realism to minimalist expression, using only triangular shapes and a solid flat light colour to refract the panels forms in mono tones. These depictions of Ravens are made with minimal visual stimulation. The birds statute stances are achieved with careful study and a minimum number of cuts and folds in sheets of Cotton Rag Paper. Each represents a specific posture. Neon glass is incorporated into this paper series as a backdrop of colour to reflect the playful of the Corvus Corax, it’s also less austere that the Metal Raven Series. Removing any trace of emotion provides the viewer to contemplate the structural anatomy of the piece as a whole, it’s quality as a whole is what is interesting and alone, making it more clear, concise and powerful.

Resident Series

As we develop a permaculture property on the Sunshine Coast we also develop the astonishing variety of West-Coast bird species that visit and dwell upon it. It is remarkably rewarding to know that your efforts towards self sustainability are noted and appreciated by the birds we call and talk to as friends. We love the birds, the work they do, the joy they bring, the challenges they face and the stories they leave behind. The birds represented in this ongoing series integrates the species within the environments as seen at various points in time on the property we call home. The oil painting on canvas attempt to reflect the time shared, and reference it so that the energy from the visitation, whether it be long or short, grows and adds to rest of the looped times and comings and going on, by process of creation and sharing with you. Blurred lines, abstract integrations, coloured saturations, explosive encounters, quiet reverence, and a whole flock more. We are blessed to be caregivers to this sacred place.

Oval Series

Hens play a vital role on our permaculture property, providing home based egg protein and amazing fertilizer, and contributing to our path of self sustainability and food security. they are play a major source of inspiration and art expression for painting, and photography and multi media. When chicks have hatched over the years it is an incredible time of nurturing and bonding with new little heart beats on the property. Of the many special shared times holding these birds and showing them the world outside their coup for the first time was magic…so much so that a series of works photographic capturing chicks seeing the world for the very first time was born. These signed limited edition prints (20) are archival di-bond aluminium face-mounts and are all prepared by very skilled printers and fabricators.
